Winery Tenuta di Montecucco | Loc. Montecucco-Cinigiano 58044 Cinigiano

Winery Tenuta di Montecucco, Montecucco-Cinigiano, Grosseto, Tuscany

The winery “Tenuta di Montecucco“ is located in the region Maremma-Tuscany, in the town Cinigiano of the province Grosseto.  In this small region of Tuscany, which comprises only a few kilometers, one can discover many wonderful small villages and a hilly landscape that gently levels towards the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Historic documents indicate that the brothers Rodolfo and Ildibrandino, the sons of Corbulinos of Montecucci, donated Montecucco in the year 1106 to the Camaldolese monks and already back then the great quality of the soil and the good wine was mentioned.

In the beginning of the 1500s the property was overwritten to Marcello Cervini, who later on was elected pope “Marcello II”.

Around 1700 the Cervinis were ennobled to the rank of counts by Cosimo III and they sold the property in the year 1828 to Emilio Piccolomini Clementini. Today the property is owned by the corporation ColleMassari.spa.

The “Tenuta di Montecucco” extends on over 700 hectares of soil, cultivated as vineyards and olive groves, all the way to the core of Doc Montecucco ( the eponym), where you have a great view from the mountain Monte Amiata all the way to the island Montechristo at the horizon.

The structure of the soil is determined by a high ratio of minerals and the moderate hill-site favors the drainage capacity. The favorable climate allows the plants to profit from the dry periods during summer and the high temperature fluctuation between day and night in the fall.

Thanks to these favorable climate and environment conditions, wine and oil of best quality and texture can be cultivated.

Special dedication and respect for soil and environment is our first priority and therefore all of our products are certified organic.

The growing area of the „Tenuta di Montecucco“ is located between 100 and 350 meters above the sea.

The vineyards are located in the south, southeast and northeast. The vineyards are cultivated according to plant protection regulations.

The property is desolate with a high ratio of fragmented sandstone rocks.

The vineyards planted with red grapes have a surface area of about 30 hectares, 80 % of it is planted with Sangiovese, 10 % with Canaiolo, 5 % Cabernet and the remaining 5 % is planted with Syrah. The vineyards with grapes extend over 2 hectares that are completely planted with Vermentino.

The density of the plants is about 5.500 vines a hectare.

The vines are cultivated with help of the cordon and guyot method and generate a crop of 50 quintals a hectare.

The vintage is conducted manually

The olives are harvested from our 10.000 olive trees of the species Correggiolo, Moraiolo and Leccino. The harvest is conducted partly manual, partly mechanical during the period from the end of October to the end of November, always considering closely the stage of maturity of the olive. The same day as the harvest, the olives are pressed in our antique mill with mill stones. A centrifugal separates the oil from the “olive water”.

The Extra Vergine Olive Oil of the “Tenuta di Montecucco“ is filled in dark glass bottles and stored with controlled temperature until it’s sold in various locations.

It is oil with a full flavor, green color with golden reflexes and a pleasant aroma that reminds you of fresh olives, cleanliness and herbs with a little dominance of artichoke flavor.
The taste is balanced between bitter and spicy with a breeze of almond and fresh vegetables.

Our company follows the regulations of the “Consorzio dell’Olio Toscano” for the certification IGP TOSCANO.
