Winery Tenuta Podernovo, Terricciola, Pisa, Tuscany

Tenuta Podernovo is a charming hillside vineyard situated in the town of Terricciola, in the prestigious and up-and-coming wine-making zone known as the Colline Pisane, a hilly region within the province of Pisa.

The Lunelli family fell in love with these hills and, inspired by several generations of wine-making experience, decided to dedicate itself, with passion and conviction, to the creation of highly prestigious red wines, which could find no better home than this Tuscan land.

The unique geographical position and composition of the earth, rich in sand and fossil deposits, create the optimal microclimate and conditions to cultivate grapes. Wine has represented and continues to represent the cultural and historical identity of this area, providing it with a sense of continuity, from the Etruscans to the present-day.

The estate comprises over 80 hectares of land and, when fully operational, accommodates 40 hectares of vineyards, the majority of which are Sangiovese, with an average density of approximately 6,000 vines per hectare, rigorously cultivated in espalier fashion.

The winery was created by fully respecting the morphology of the land and with a particular focus on protecting the surrounding landscape.

This goal was achieved by using local stone taken from the nearby countryside and using colours perfectly in synch with the surroundings. The winery organises guided tours and tastings.

The extraordinary quality of this territory, skilfully optimised by the technical expertise of the Ferrari wine-makers, gives rise to two great red wines, Teuto and Aliotto, distinctive for their elegance, because the Sangiovese cultivated in this part of Tuscany is elegant indeed.

Teuto, aged for 20 months in large barrels, highlights the region’s natural calling for the production of an elegant Sangiovese.

Aliotto, obtained from a grape blend comprising 60% Sangiovese and the remainder Cabernet, Merlot and other local grapes, has spicier notes. Both have an elegant tannin profile, a balanced texture and a finale of smooth intensity.
