Winery La Spinosa, Barberino Val D'Elsa, Florence, Tuscany

La Spinosa was established in Tuscany in 1982: a group of friends, almost all of whom already had professional expertise in the farming sector and already worked for other farms in the area, decided to do something together.

At Barberino Val D’Elsa, in Tuscany, midway between Florence and Siena, they purchased some land that had been abandoned for years and… started work.

After initially growing cereals and breeding livestock, the current vocation of the company, focussing on the cultivation of vines and olive trees, was soon established: wine and extra-virgin olive oil are now the main products of our company.

Right from the start, we chose a farming method with a low environmental impact. Since 1994, in fact, we have been certified as Organic Growers by CCPB of Bologna.

We are convinced that organic farming provides an improved and more natural balance for the vines and for the environment as a whole, as well as protecting the health of both the producer and the consumer.

The typical Mediterranean climate, the particularly favourable exposure, and the organic farming method, which respects the vegetable and production balance of the vines, allow us to produce quality wines with characteristics that highlight the typical features of each vine type.

We mainly make our wines using native grape varieties (sangiovese, canaiolo, colorino, fogliatonda, mammolo, malvasia nera, trebbiano toscano and malvasia lunga del chianti) together with small percentages of other vines (merlot, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay).

In the old “chioppi” vineyard, planted over 70 years ago, we also select and multiply some grape varieties and clones that are risking extinction. The names of some of our wines derive from the names of these vines.

Our olives are harvested by manual stripping and sent to the mill within 48 hours after harvesting. Continuous cycle cold pressing is performed at a certified mill for processing organically grown olives. The oil features a very low level of acidity and an intense aroma with hints of aromatic herbs.
